In November 2022, former school resource officer Steven Rountos was arrested for tampering with evidence related to the dissemination of nude photos of two former Brookfield High School students. He admitted to passing around the photos and intentionally destroying a cellphone believed to contain related information. Rountos resigned from the department in November 2021 during an internal investigation. In February 2025, he pleaded no contest to the evidence-tampering charge and is scheduled for sentencing in June 2025. The Brookfield Police Department plans to pursue the decertification of his police certification following his sentencing. Additionally, a civil lawsuit filed by the two former students in May 2023 is pending in federal court, alleging constitutional violations, negligence, and emotional distress.
