On June 16, 2019, Sgt. O’Neill fatally shot Eric Logan, a Black man, during a confrontation. O’Neill claimed Logan refused orders to drop a knife. The incident was not recorded by O’Neill’s body camera, leading to public outcry and protests. A special prosecutor was appointed to investigate the shooting. Amidst the ensuing controversy and media attention, O’Neill resigned from the South Bend Police Department in July 2019.
