Darryl Boykins – South Bend Police Department

In 2012, Chief Boykins, the first Black police chief of South Bend, was demoted by Mayor Pete Buttigieg amid allegations of federal investigation into illegal recordings of officers’ phone calls. Boykins filed a discrimination lawsuit against the city, which was settled for $50,000. The incident raised concerns about racial discrimination within the department and the city’s handling of internal affairs.
