On October 10, 2020, Officer Chase Lawler was involved in an incident where he allegedly used excessive force against Jacinta Danks during a traffic stop. Danks claimed that after being pulled from the car, Officer Lawler stepped on her back, pinning her to the pavement while she was face down. The case underwent nearly three years of litigation before reaching a settlement just before trial. The court allowed a Monell ‘failure to train’ claim against the City of Kenner to proceed to trial, noting numerous citizen-initiated use of force complaints over a five-year period and issues with the department’s record-keeping and investigations.
