In June 2017, Officer Henry Diaz, while off-duty, engaged in an altercation in East Boston where he repeatedly punched a pedestrian who had stepped in front of his car. An internal investigation by the Somerville Police Department concluded that Diaz was the aggressor and had been untruthful during the probe. Consequently, he was terminated from his position. Diaz contested his dismissal, alleging racial discrimination, but the courts upheld the termination, finding no evidence of discriminatory intent.
