In June 2015, Sergeant Lonnie Soppeland unintentionally discharged his firearm during a traffic stop, shooting motorcyclist Matthew Hovland-Knase in the arm. Hovland-Knase filed a federal lawsuit in 2017, alleging violation of his Fourth Amendment rights and seeking $500,000 in damages.
