In December 2024, Captain Jim Swoboda was awarded $10.8 million in a lawsuit against the Kansas City Police Department. He alleged retaliation and discrimination after testifying on behalf of a Black officer in a discrimination case. Swoboda claimed he was stripped of his gun and police vehicle, placed on limited duty, and subjected to surveillance by fellow officers. The jury awarded him $9.6 million in punitive damages and $1.2 million in compensatory damages.
