    Over the past decade, the Newark Police Department has faced numerous disciplinary actions and lawsuits. In 2023, the city agreed to pay $4 million to over 190 former police cadets to settle a federal class action suit alleging unpaid overtime during their training in 2017 and 2018. Additionally, in 2024, five officers were suspended without pay following a botched operation in East Orange, leading to a lawsuit challenging the disciplinary process. These incidents highlight ongoing challenges within the department regarding officer conduct and administrative oversight.
