In September 2020, Officer John Martin conducted a wellness check on Jason Meyer, who was severely ill. Martin failed to call for medical assistance, and Meyer was found dead during a subsequent check. A lawsuit filed in 2022 alleges negligence, gross negligence, and willful and wanton negligence against Martin, the police department, and the town of Wake Forest. Martin had been with the department for approximately five months at the time of the incident.
