During his tenure as Austin Police Chief, Art Acevedo faced criticism for his handling of sexual assault cases. In January 2024, his return to Austin for a new city position was met with strong objections from the community, particularly from sexual assault survivors who had sued the city for failing to properly investigate their cases during Acevedo’s tenure. Facing backlash, Acevedo declined the position.
