In April 2015, Officer Mando Kenneth Gomez fatally shot 22-year-old Erik Salas Sanchez multiple times inside his mother’s house. The family filed a lawsuit alleging excessive force and poor training by the El Paso Police Department. In March 2022, the city settled the lawsuit for $1.2 million without admitting wrongdoing.
