In January 2023, Sheriff William Bohnyak was sanctioned by the Vermont Criminal Justice Council for assigning a Level II deputy to investigate cases beyond their authorized scope, including sensitive felony cases involving sexual assaults. The Council issued a written warning and mandated additional training for Bohnyak. Additionally, he was named as a co-defendant in a civil lawsuit related to a 2019 road rage incident involving former deputy William J. Pine, alleging negligent hiring and retention practices.
