In October 2020, Officer Jeffrey Strock fatally shot his ex-girlfriend, Julie Fandino, and then himself. Prior to the murder-suicide, Strock exhibited signs of instability, including expressing thoughts of harming Fandino and himself. Despite these red flags, no preventive actions were taken by the department. Fandino’s family has since filed a lawsuit against the Berlin Police Department for negligence, alleging that the department failed to protect her from a foreseeable crime.
