In July 2024, a Clearfield police officer stopped Special Olympian Shawn Nicholas around 3 a.m. while he was walking home from a bar. The officer accused Nicholas of jaywalking and acting suspiciously. Despite Nicholas’s compliance, the officer used force to subdue him. The incident was captured on video, which went viral, leading to public outcry over the officer’s conduct. The Clearfield Police Department acknowledged the officer’s mistake in applying the jaywalking statute and stated that adjustments to training and behavior evaluations would be made. Nicholas and his family are planning to file a lawsuit against the department.
