Convicted in 2023 for his role in the death of Elijah McClain, a 23-year-old Black man detained in Aurora in August 2019. Roedema was found guilty of criminally negligent homicide and third-degree assault after prosecutors showed that he helped hold McClain down and failed to respond to his pleas for help as McClain was violently restrained and injected with ketamine. He was sentenced to 14 months in jail plus probation – one of the first Colorado officers to be jailed for a death-in-custody incident.
