In 2005, Sergeant Smith was involved in an altercation at his residence with Neldon and Randale Johnson, who entered his home without permission. A physical confrontation ensued, leading to the arrest of both Johnsons for assault. The Johnsons later filed a lawsuit alleging unlawful arrest and imprisonment. The court found that the officers had probable cause for the arrests, and the lawsuit was dismissed.
