In March 2019, Sgt. Michael Christensen responded to a mental health crisis involving Benjamin Joseph ‘Joey’ Herold. During the encounter, Christensen shot Herold in the face with a pepper ball from close range, resulting in the loss of Herold’s right eye. Herold filed a federal civil rights lawsuit alleging excessive force and inadequate training by the department.
