In 2021, Sheriff Matthew Wade was sued by Lieutenant Chames for alleged race and gender discrimination, unequal pay, and retaliation. Chames claimed that Wade paid her less than other lieutenants and retaliated against her by asking her to waive her civil service rights for a small raise. The case was dismissed in 2023 due to qualified immunity and other legal defenses.
