In 2007, Officer Robert Piel was terminated after making comments about ‘murdering or shooting Department members’ during a meeting. Additionally, he was found to be dishonest when questioned about these remarks. Piel and his wife sued the City of Federal Way for wrongful termination, alleging retaliation for his involvement in union activities. The trial court granted summary judgment in favor of the city, concluding that the statutory remedies available were adequate to protect public employee collective bargaining rights.
