In October 2022, Deputy Michael Uyehara arrested an 82-year-old woman who was checking on her neighbor during a police response to a suicide call. Body camera footage showed Uyehara handcuffing the woman despite her explanation that she was there at the victim’s wife’s request. An investigation found multiple policy violations, including unreasonable use of force and providing false statements. Uyehara resigned from the Sheriff’s Office while on administrative leave, and his peace officer certification was revoked by the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board in November 2024.
