Deputy Brent Smith – Sebastian County Sheriff’s Office

In May 2020, Deputy Brent Smith was involved in an incident where he and Deputy Jonathon Outhouse used excessive force against Tyler Unique McClain, a Black woman who had crashed her vehicle. Despite McClain being disoriented and medics suspecting low blood sugar, Smith forcibly removed her from her car, causing her to fall. He then handcuffed her and, along with Outhouse, pinned her to the ground. McClain was later tased by another deputy. She filed a federal civil rights lawsuit alleging excessive force and violation of her rights. The case was set for a jury trial in July 2023. Why This Matters

By organizing this data, we can potentially demonstrate when officers were previously aware of laws they later claim ignorance of, challenging qualified immunity defenses and promoting accountability.
