In June 2019, Deputy Moore was involved in the arrest of journalist Michael Gammariello during a logging protest near Rio Dell. Despite Gammariello identifying himself as press and displaying his credentials, Moore dismissed this and proceeded to arrest him. During the arrest, Moore used force that resulted in Gammariello sustaining a fractured rib, contusions, and other injuries. A federal civil rights lawsuit was filed against Humboldt County and Deputies Moore and Mendes, alleging police brutality, false arrest, and First Amendment retaliation. The case was settled in May 2021, with the county agreeing to compensate Gammariello and request the dismissal of related criminal charges.
