In July 2013, he was placed on administrative leave due to a domestic violence issue involving his wife. Upon returning to work, Sotelo engaged in inappropriate behavior towards a fellow correctional officer, including groping and sexual harassment. These incidents led to criminal charges, and in July 2014, Sotelo pleaded no contest to felony battery on a custodial officer and felony stalking.
