In June 2020, Deputy Miguel Vega fatally shot 18-year-old Andres Guardado five times in the back near Gardena. Guardado was reportedly lying face down when Vega approached to handcuff him. Vega claimed Guardado reached for a gun, prompting the shooting. The incident led to significant public protests and an $8 million settlement approved by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors in November 2022. The district attorney’s office is still deciding whether to file charges against Vega.
