In April 2004, Deputy David Zander, along with Deputy David Hackman, allegedly beat 71-year-old Jose Jimenez during an arrest, resulting in broken ribs. Jimenez filed a civil rights lawsuit against Zander, Hackman, Sheriff Curtis Hill, and San Benito County. In June 2021, Zander was terminated from the department for multiple allegations, including dishonesty and policy violations related to handling confidential informants. However, in July 2022, an arbitrator reinstated Zander with full back pay and seniority, finding that the charges were unsubstantiated.
