Sgt. Curtis McCune, a 62-year-old white male, filed a federal lawsuit on October 27, 2022, against Sheriff Mark Pettway, alleging racial discrimination and a hostile work environment. McCune claimed that on June 30, 2021, he was disciplined for an infraction while a black female employee involved in the same incident was not. During the disciplinary meeting, McCune experienced a serious medical incident requiring hospitalization. The lawsuit alleges that the Sheriff’s Office has a habit of allowing and condoning discrimination based on race and retaliation.
