On February 18, 2023, Deputy Lujan conducted a traffic stop on Brent Thompson for expired registration. Thompson provided a false name and, upon being confronted, fled towards Interstate 25. Deputy Lujan pursued Thompson and deployed a Taser as Thompson attempted to cross the highway, causing him to fall into a lane of traffic where he was fatally struck by an oncoming vehicle. The incident led to a wrongful death lawsuit filed by Thompson’s family, alleging excessive force and reckless disregard for human life. In August 2024, Larimer County agreed to a $5 million settlement with the family. The District Attorney’s Office declined to file criminal charges against Deputy Lujan, citing no reasonable likelihood of proving criminal culpability beyond a reasonable doubt.

Why This Matters

By organizing this data, we can potentially demonstrate when officers were previously aware of laws they later claim ignorance of, challenging qualified immunity defenses and promoting accountability.
