In May 2014, Deputy Dominic Torres sexually assaulted inmate Jennifer Hernandez at the Otero County Jail. Torres was known to watch female inmates undress and shower, and he provided contraband in exchange for sexual favors. After Hernandez reported the assault, Torres was fired and pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual conduct in a correctional institution. He was sentenced to 30 days in jail, four years of probation, community service, and required to register as a sex offender. The county settled with Hernandez for $150,000 in January 2017.
