    In 1997, Sheriff Richard Thompson failed to arrest Ray Doggett during multiple domestic violence incidents involving Vickie Doggett, despite having substantial grounds to do so. He also neglected to provide Vickie with mandatory notices of her rights under Montana law. This negligence was found to be a substantial factor in Vickie’s death, leading to a jury awarding her sons $358,000 in a wrongful death lawsuit.
