In August 2011, Sheriff Freedom Crawford was involved in a bar fight at the Montana Tavern in Lewistown, where he threw a man through a window. The victim sustained facial cuts requiring approximately $2,000 in medical treatment. Crawford pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges of assault, obstructing a peace officer, criminal mischief, and disorderly conduct. He received a six-month suspended jail sentence, was fined $1,350, and ordered to pay over $2,600 in restitution. Additionally, he was required to write a letter of apology to the victim’s family, local law enforcement, and the Lewistown community. Following the incident, Crawford entered a 28-day inpatient treatment program for alcoholism. Despite calls for his resignation, he initially refused to step down but eventually resigned in October 2014 after being found sleeping on a sidewalk in Wolf Point, suspected of intoxication.
