In October 2022, Sheriff Allen Fulton was involved in a domestic dispute with his wife after both had consumed alcohol. During the incident, he refused to return her phone, attempting to prevent her from contacting law enforcement. When officers arrived, he was initially evasive but later admitted to the altercation. As a result, the Montana Public Safety Officer Standards and Training Council placed his law enforcement certification on a one-year probation, requiring a chemical dependency evaluation and compliance with any treatment recommendations. In November 2023, a judge issued a protective order against Fulton, barring him from his family, their home, and local schools, following another domestic dispute. He was required to stay at least 1,500 feet away from his wife, children, and their residence. Despite these incidents, Fulton continued to serve as sheriff, as state law does not require sheriffs to be POST-certified.
