    In 2016, Sheriff Fred Wegener demoted Sgt. Tonjes three levels without following the Sheriff’s Office policies, leading to allegations of due process violations. The demotion was linked to the handling of a fatal incident involving a deputy. Sgt. Tonjes resigned, claiming constructive discharge, and filed a lawsuit alleging breach of contract and violation of due process rights.
