KeymasterDeputy Michael King has been involved in multiple incidents of alleged misconduct, including two fatal shootings and several lawsuits alleging excessive force. On February 22, 2019, King fatally shot Timothy Rhodes on Rhodes’ own property. King did not wear his department-issued body camera during the incident. The Roane County Commission settled a wrongful death lawsuit with Rhodes’ estate for $700,000 in December 2021. ([wvmetronews.com](https://wvmetronews.com/2021/12/20/settlement-in-wrongful-death-case-raises-more-questions/?utm_source=openai)) On October 22, 2020, King fatally shot Michael Nichols on Nichols’ front porch. King was not wearing his body camera during this incident either. Nichols’ family filed a federal lawsuit alleging that King shot Nichols without justification. King denied the allegations, and the lawsuit was set to go to trial in September 2021. ([mountainstatespotlight.org](https://mountainstatespotlight.org/2021/07/01/roane-county-wv-deputy-mike-king-investigation/?utm_source=openai)) Also in 2019, David Idleman alleged that King and state troopers assaulted him without cause during a traffic stop, resulting in a concussion and other injuries. Idleman settled the lawsuit for $60,000 in 2021. ([mountainstatespotlight.org](https://mountainstatespotlight.org/2021/07/01/roane-county-wv-deputy-mike-king-investigation/?utm_source=openai)) Despite these incidents, internal investigations have found no fault with King, and he has continued to serve as a deputy without disciplinary action.
