In 2017, Sheriff John Urquhart was accused by former deputy Brian Barnes of groping him in a parking lot after a dinner meeting in 2014. A Renton police investigation found probable cause to charge Urquhart with indecent liberties, a felony. Urquhart denied the allegations, calling them politically motivated, and filed a defamation lawsuit against Barnes. The case was referred to the Snohomish County Prosecuting Attorney for review.
