In July 2020, Officer Michael Boyes, who had not yet attended the state’s basic police academy, was involved in the fatal shooting of Douglas Diamond during a welfare check. After Sgt. Sean Collinson tackled Diamond, Boyes shot Diamond, resulting in his death. The family filed a lawsuit alleging civil rights violations, claiming the officers made fundamental tactical errors and failed to abide by standard use of force training. The city and county have claimed qualified immunity in response to the lawsuit.
