On February 13, 2019, Officer Lopez struck and killed 17-year-old Nearreada Robles with his patrol car while she was in a crosswalk with the right of way. He was driving approximately 60 mph in a 25 mph zone without lights or sirens. Lopez pleaded guilty to careless driving and no longer works with the department. The county settled a wrongful-death lawsuit for $1.3 million.
