Undersheriff John Dempsey was named in a lawsuit filed by Officer John Cicchetti, who alleged that Dempsey failed to act on complaints of harassment and permitted a hostile work environment. Cicchetti reported over seventy-five incidents of harassment dating back to November 1998, including verbal abuse, taunting, and physical intimidation. Despite Cicchetti’s formal complaints in April 2000, Dempsey’s response was deemed inadequate, leading to Cicchetti’s resignation in February 2002. The lawsuit claimed violations of the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination (LAD) due to the hostile work environment and failure to address the harassment.
