In March 2021, Captain David Stambaugh was named in three lawsuits alleging misconduct. He was accused of releasing confidential medical and personal information about James Cole, a candidate for Valley County Sheriff, using a false identity to defame Cole during his campaign. Stambaugh also allegedly disclosed confidential employment information about former Undersheriff Jason Speer, interfering with Speer’s current employment. Additionally, Stambaugh was accused of threatening and assaulting Marine Deputy Ed Parker, leading to Parker’s resignation and relocation due to safety concerns. These actions resulted in lawsuits against both Stambaugh and Valley County for negligent hiring and retention.
