On October 8, 2024, while on duty and in uniform, Sanders brandished his personally owned firearm during a heated argument. He failed to document the use of force or any related events. Following an investigation by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, Sanders was charged with first-degree assault and battery and misconduct in office. He resigned from the Sheriff’s Office on January 2, 2025, and was arrested the following day.
