In September 2019, Officer Christopher Michels was accused of using excessive force during a traffic stop involving Phetsadakone. Michels allegedly pulled Phetsadakone from his vehicle, resulting in a fractured orbital bone and unconsciousness. A lawsuit was filed against Michels and the City of Auburn, alleging violations of Phetsadakone’s Fourth Amendment rights. Michels had a history of use-of-force incidents and internal investigations finding his performance unacceptable.
