On August 20, 2022, Officer Brandon Thompson conducted a traffic stop on Otis French Jr. for a minor equipment violation. During the encounter, Thompson attempted to pat down French, leading to a physical altercation. French fled, and Thompson pursued him, resulting in Thompson shooting French multiple times, leading to his death. A federal civil rights lawsuit was filed against Thompson and the City of Bay Minette, alleging unlawful shooting and excessive force. The lawsuit also highlighted that Thompson had been previously terminated by the Bay Minette Police Department and other surrounding departments, raising questions about his fitness as an officer.
