Former deputy sheriff Ben Fields pleaded guilty in January 2024 to raping a female prisoner on home incarceration. He was sentenced to six months in jail and six and a half years on probation for charges including third-degree rape, third-degree sodomy, perjury, and tampering with a prisoner monitoring device. Fields coerced the victim into sexual acts by offering to waive her monitoring fees and used his position to disable her ankle monitor. A civil lawsuit filed by the victim alleges that Fields forced her to have sex in the district judge’s chambers over six months in exchange for staying out of jail. The lawsuit also accuses Sheriff Mickey Stines of failing to adequately train and supervise Fields.
