In August 2022, Sheriff Donald Jones was indicted on charges of first-degree official misconduct and tampering with a witness. The indictment alleged that in October 2021, Jones, while serving as sheriff, provided legal advice to a criminal defendant, constituting official misconduct. Additionally, he was accused of making false statements with the intent to influence court testimony, leading to the witness tampering charge. In April 2023, Jones pleaded guilty to the misconduct charge, resulting in a one-year prison sentence that was probated. He was also placed on pre-trial diversion for three years for the tampering charge, with conditions including a prohibition from working in law enforcement and three months of home incarceration.
