In April 2020, Deputy Steve Claxton was accused by inmate Bobby Joe Poynter of excessive force. Poynter alleged that Claxton sprayed him with mace without provocation and later, along with Deputy Chancellor, physically assaulted him, including placing him in a chokehold and beating him for approximately five minutes. Poynter filed a lawsuit claiming violations of his constitutional rights.
