As police chief from 2009 to 2017, Hawsey was implicated in a lawsuit alleging the establishment of speed traps and the imposition of a $500 impound fee on vehicles during drug-related arrests without due process. The suit also claimed illegal confiscation of cash and property without following state forfeiture laws. Hawsey resigned in February 2017 following the filing of the lawsuit.
