On January 1, 2019, Deputy Jorge Sobrino punched a handcuffed suspect, David O’Connell, who was restrained to a hospital bed. The incident was captured on body camera footage. An internal affairs investigation found Sobrino violated multiple BSO policies, including Use of Force and Conformity to Laws. Initially, a 30-day suspension was recommended, but Sheriff Gregory Tony terminated Sobrino on October 29, 2019. Sobrino faced a pending misdemeanor battery charge related to the incident.
