On November 12, 2023, Deputy Jesse Hernandez fired 22 shots at a handcuffed suspect, Marquis Jackson, who was seated in the back of his patrol car. Hernandez mistook the sound of an acorn falling on the vehicle for gunfire. An internal investigation found his use of force was excessive and not objectively reasonable. Hernandez resigned on December 4, 2023, during the investigation. Jackson filed a lawsuit against the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office in March 2024, seeking unspecified damages for the incident.
