Former Deputy Sheriff Brian Helfert faced multiple charges of criminal sexual conduct (CSC) involving minors. In February 2022, 16 felony charges, including first-degree CSC and child sexually abusive activity, were dismissed due to evidentiary issues. However, in February 2022, Helfert was arraigned on four new cases involving 18 felony charges, including eight life offenses related to incidents alleged to have occurred between 2003 and 2018. In December 2022, he pleaded ‘no contest’ to one count of CSC with intent to commit sexual penetration, with a sentencing agreement of 25 months in jail, five years of probation, and lifetime registration as a sex offender. Additional charges are pending, with pretrial conferences scheduled for June 2023.
