Former Police Chief Ernest Finley filed a federal lawsuit against the City of Montgomery and Mayor Steven Reed in March 2023, alleging a conspiracy to force his resignation through false complaints and ethics violations. Finley claimed that he was targeted for enforcing civil rights laws and promoting officers equitably, regardless of race or gender. The lawsuit also alleged that Mayor Reed sought to promote Black officers preferentially and that Finley was pressured to resign under threat of termination.
