On December 29, 2019, Officer Esbenshade was involved in the fatal shooting of Kelly Michael Stephens during an evening confrontation on Cinema Drive. Stephens was shot once after allegedly failing to comply with orders to stop. The family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Esbenshade, the Juneau Police Department, and the City and Borough of Juneau. The lawsuit was dismissed on December 4, 2020, with no settlement or liability admitted by the defendants.
